Boiler repair
Boiler repair in Bristol
If your boiler has stopped in Bristol, check the pressure gauge, the thermostat and whether the condensate pipe outside has frozen. If that does not fix it, the boiler needs a Gas Safe registered engineer, as all gas work in the UK must be done by one. Hard water scale is a common cause of combi faults here.

You need this when
- No heating or no hot water
- The pressure gauge keeps dropping below 1 bar
- A fault code or flashing light on the boiler
- Banging, kettling or whistling noises
- Hot water goes hot then cold on a combi
- The boiler stops in freezing weather
The visit
What happens, step by step
- 01
Quick checks first
We ask about pressure, the thermostat, fault codes and the condensate pipe. Some faults can be cleared without a visit.
- 02
Diagnose
The engineer tests the boiler safely and finds the failed part.
- 03
Repair
We fit the part, or order it and agree a return visit.
- 04
Safety and combustion check
Gas work ends with safety checks on the flue and burner.

Advice
If the boiler is old and parts are scarce, we tell you honestly whether repair or replacement makes more sense.
Checks you can do first
Before booking, try these:
- Pressure. Most sealed systems sit around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. If it is lower, the boiler may lock out. Your manual shows how to top up.
- Thermostat and timer. Batteries and settings change after a power cut.
- Condensate pipe. In a hard frost the plastic pipe outside can freeze and stop the boiler. Pour warm, not boiling, water over it to thaw.
- Reset. Press reset once. If it locks out again, stop and call an engineer.
Never take the boiler casing off. Only a Gas Safe registered engineer can work on gas appliances. You can check an engineer's ID card on the Gas Safe Register.
Hard water and combi faults in Bristol
A combi heats tap water as it passes through a heat exchanger. In hard water, scale builds up inside it. Symptoms are hot water that runs hot then cold, noisy heating, a boiler that keeps cutting out and reduced hot water flow.
Building Regulations guidance in the Domestic Building Services Compliance Guide says that where water hardness is above 200 ppm, the feed to water heaters and the hot water side of combi boilers should be treated to slow scale. Bristol Water classes its area as moderately hard to very hard, so many Bristol combis should have a scale reducer on the cold feed. If yours does not, we can fit one when we repair it.
Repair or replace
Most faults are worth repairing. A failed diverter valve, fan, pump or sensor is a normal repair. Replacing the boiler starts to make sense when a big part such as the heat exchanger fails on an older boiler, when parts are no longer made, or when repairs keep coming back. If you are in that position, our new boiler page explains the choice between combi, system and regular boilers.
Landlords have extra duties. Gas appliances in rented homes need a safety check every 12 months by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and tenants must get a copy of the record. The HSE explains the rules.
Servicing keeps repairs down
A yearly service is the best way to avoid breakdowns. The engineer checks the burner, flue, seals, pressure and safety devices, and cleans the parts that need it. In Bristol, a service is also a chance to check the hot water side of a combi for scale and to clean the system filter. Our guide to a boiler service in Bristol explains what should be checked.
Most manufacturers need a yearly service to keep the warranty valid. Keep the service record with your boiler paperwork. If you sell your home, buyers and their surveyors will ask for it.
Price
What affects the price
The cost depends on the fault, the part and its price for your make and model, and whether it is in stock. Older boilers can have expensive or hard to find parts.
| What | Price |
|---|---|
| Boiler fault visit and diagnosis | price confirmed when you book |
| Common part replacement | price confirmed after diagnosis |

Questions
Boiler repair: what people ask
Why is my boiler losing pressure?
Usually a small leak somewhere on the heating system, a failing expansion vessel or a pressure relief valve letting water out. Check for drips at radiators and the pipe outside.
My boiler stopped in the frost. What now?
It may be a frozen condensate pipe. Thaw it with warm water and press reset. If it keeps happening, the pipe may need rerouting or a larger size outside.
Can any plumber repair my boiler?
No. Gas boiler work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Ask for their ID card and check it on the Gas Safe Register.
How often should a boiler be serviced?
Most manufacturers recommend once a year, and many warranties require it. Landlords must have a gas safety check every 12 months.
